Computer lab transformation

Recently the computer lab at my school was remodeled, a kind of out with the old and in with the new. I don’t mean new technology I mean, to a certain degree, the way we learn. In the old computer lab all of the places where everyone sat was designed so that everyone faced the front and could listen to the teacher and there was not much room to move, showing that when the lab was originally designed it was not really a place for collaboration. The computers were close together, the desks couldn’t be rearranged and you couldn’t slide around on your chair. In the new computer lab it seems to be more for a place of collaboration and learning from each other rather than a “the teacher has all the answers and you learn from them only”. I think this is a good thing because a lot of the time collaboration and brainstorming between people can create significant results that a person, on their own, wouldn’t have come up with. I think that this new design is a pretty good improvement over the old one, there is a table in the center of the room for group discussion or projects, there is a lot more room for us students to move around and talk to our other classmates, and there isn’t as much clutter around the room such as wires and old computers that no one uses. Also the tables are now able to be moved so if sometime in the future the lab is changed again then it will be much easier. Personally I think that the new computer lab is better than the old one and will make the learning environment more enjoyable. Now all we need is the 3D printer. Thank you.

Programming

I chose to take Programming because the world is becoming so technologically advanced and everything on the internet is built from code. So it would be a great tool to have in the future when you may have a problem with your computer, you can fix it yourself instead of getting someone else to do it. I can also use programming to make a website or an app.

Programming is the language of computers. The things focused in this discipline are problem solving and the ability to find what is wrong with the code you have wrote and come up with a solution.

Famous examples where programming is used Facebook, the World Wide Web and any operating system. Some things you need to know to become a programmer is algebra and calculus so that you can understand how computers run by using mathematical equations. To get a job you also need a degree, and you need to know how to write code, debug, and different algorithms that computers run on. Some jobs in this area are TECHNICAL DESIGNER, UI PROGRAMMER, COMPUTER PROGRAMMER ANALYST and PROGRAMMERS (GAMEPLAY/GENERALIST), just to name a few. Places where I can work include Microsoft, NVIDIA, Apple, Google, and Facebook. The future of this area is expanding pretty quickly and lots of things are run by code and different algorithms. Programming is able to automate a lot of things, like production and agriculture, but the bad thing about that is people may lose their jobs but if you’re a programmer you won’t be affected as soon as other people like lawyers or an accountant.

Note:

Programming is not the only course I have been looking at, I would also like to try animating because I am good at drawing and art and I think it would be fun to create funny animated shorts. So if I could do both it would be great, and there are great jobs that come from the stuff that I would learn in animation, such as 3D sculptor or I could make animated ads for companies.

Private Vs public

The Art institute is different from private post secondary schools because it is specialized in certain subjects, other universities like UBC and SFU have pretty much everything, you can learn how to be surgeon or a programmer, they aren’t as specialized as Ai. I’m still not sure if I want to pursue what I’m taking in this class as a career, but all of the courses that Ai offers sound like they would get you fun jobs, so you would like going to your job. If I am to pursue a job in animation or programming , which are the two courses I’ve been looking into, I would like to go to a school like The Art Institute.

Virtual Reality (VR)

How it works                                                                                                                                                    Virtual reality, also known as Virtual Environment, is a great piece of technology. There are many uses for it, such as training in the military, this could be good for testing soldiers stress levels during a mission. It can also be used to test peoples abilities and critical thinking skills while they are under pressure, like fighting fires or doctors operating on a patient. Currently VE is mostly being developed for video games, it gives users a more intense experience within the game. Movies could be another area this tech could expand in to, putting the watcher into the action of the movie or even seeing it through the eyes of a character. I think that VR is going to be very popular in the future and may become the norm for playing video games. I will certainly use one if I get the opportunity.

Robots

Hotel run by robots                                                                                                                                            A personal assistant,  a pet that doesn’t need exercise and the staff of an entire store never needing a break. All of those things and more are possible with robots. At first glance robots seem like a great idea, you could have one at work for you on that day you missed, a robot to do your homework or make and bring you food. Those are all nice thoughts so long as we don’t use robots excessively. But the thing is humans are lazy, we don’t want to work although there are the minority who find it fun, most just want to have fun or not do anything at all, and doing nothing is really bad for your health. Robots are beginning to take over our jobs and it is going to continue. There could be ten grocery store robots that are overseen by one person, instead of ten people scanning other peoples groceries. If we aren’t careful robots will take all of our jobs that require minimal work, like a baristas, waiters, clerks, hotel employees, garbage collectors and countless others. Robots would be something you encounter every day and it might get frustrating talking to an emotionless robot, who can in no way relate to your problem, rather than a human being. And teenagers who work at fast food places for their first jobs would no longer be needed and couldn’t earn money. They can also be dangerous, people could hack in to a robot or a whole staff of robots and wreak havoc upon anything they wished, or a robot could go haywire and start smashing anything, human or not, its no difference to a robot. I really do think that robots could be a good thing but only if they don’t take over our lives.

Yes, I know i didn’t talk about a robot take over and its talked about so much now that its cliche. Humans should be able to control how smart a robot gets and seriously build something in to the robot so that with a switch of a button it shuts down. Thank you for reading

Screenless displays

This field of technology is coming soon. The idea is that we would have a display without a screen and instead the image would be projected into the air and we would be able to touch the images and move them around but not necessarily feel it. A device without a screen would be much smaller than the phones we have today, leaving a little more pocket room. The size of a smartphone is getting bigger so if there was no screen on the phone then you could make the screen as big or small as you want. Another use for this technology is the projection of 3D images. It could be used to create a full 3D environment around you, possibly in you own living room. If you wanted to learn more about a certain place, say the amazon rain-forest, you would be able to project the environment into a room and get an idea of what its like in their without any danger at all. If there was a certain plant you saw in the environment you could go and touch it and information about it could pop up beside it. Retinal displays are another area of this tech. Their could be contact lenses that show what ever you would want, your social media stats, health or whats going on at you house. All this new tech is pretty cool but there are bad things associated with it, like making it easier for people to spy on others and invade their privacy without them knowing.  About Screenless tech
